- UNITED FOR A BETTER FUTURE
Fighting Rare Genetic Diseases
Our association is dedicated to fighting rare genetic diseases, with a particular focus on PNPT1. We work every day to build a better future, where scientific research, family support, and public awareness come together to give hope to those who need it most.
- Our Mission
Who we are
GENE.RARE is a charitable organization committed to raising awareness about rare genetic diseases, with a specific focus on PNPT1.
We organise awareness events, conferences, and educational activities to increase understanding and empathy towards these diseases. We collaborate closely with healthcare providers, research institutions, and policymakers to promote policies that improve access to necessary care. We offer targeted support to patients and their families, and we are actively involved in research and the development of new treatments, working with research institutes, universities, and healthcare organisations to foster scientific innovation.
What is PNPT1
Combined oxidative phosphorylation deficiency type 13 (commonly known as PNPT1) is a rare mitochondrial disease caused by a defect in mitochondrial protein synthesis due to the mutation of the PNPT1 gene.
It is characterised by normal early development, followed by the sudden onset, during childhood, of feeding difficulties, dysphagia, trunk hypotonia (followed by global hypotonia), motor regression, movement abnormalities (severe limb dystonia, choreoathetosis, facial dyskinesia), and decreased tendon reflexes. The course of the disease is severe but not progressive.
The impact of PNPT1
Cases in Italy
Only 2 children in Italy are affected by PNPT1 disease, highlighting the rarity and complexity of this condition.
cases worldwide
Globally, around 30 people have been diagnosed with PNPT1, underscoring the need for greater research and support.
